Book Name – Trauma and Recovery
Author Name – Judith Herman, M.D
Review by Tin Ko Latt
I write this review from my personal point of view. Trauma and Recovery is the must read book for every one who is interested in and studies trauma. Upon reading this book, we can learn about the history of trauma across history and how it relates to the political movement and evolution of study by scholars. It is so interesting that we can learn not only from the point of view from the victims but also from the perpetrators. So that we can learn and feel how the symptoms and events of trauma occur. This book is beneficial in that we can learn about the trauma reactions from the victims that will be effective in assessing the trauma victims and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. One thing that stands out for me in the book is how the communities and relationships play an important role for the victims. It takes some time for me to understand some words in the book but it is worth it. For me, the current situation in our country reflects a lot from the book and it motivates me to study more and support more for our communities that face traumatic events every day. So overall, I want to give 5 stars to this book for changing and enlightening me with every count of words in the book.

Book Name – Daring Greatly
Author Name – Brene Brown, Th.D., LMSW
Review by Nilar Aung
In a world where the fear of “not being enough” influences our lives, Brené Brown’s “Daring Greatly” presents a powerful case for embracing vulnerability as a path to wholehearted living. Brown challenges the notion that vulnerability is synonymous with weakness; instead, she mentions that it is the birthplace of courage, compassion, and connection.
Central to Brown’s message is the concept of shame resilience. That’s really insightful to me.
The book also introduces the concept of empathy as a ladder to climb out of the shame hole. Moreover, it offers practical strategies for coping with vulnerability, such as emotional writing. Brown encourages readers to be gentle with themselves, just as they would if they were a friend in need.
Brown also delves into the concept of three forms of shielding that often distance us from our vulnerabilities. These shields include foreboding joy, perfectionism, and numbing. She emphasizes the importance of being aware of these struggles, as appreciating the beauty of cracks leads to a sense of freedom.
In conclusion, “Daring Greatly” is a powerful exploration of the transformative power of vulnerability. Brown’s insights challenge us to embrace our vulnerabilities, cultivate shame resilience, and live wholeheartedly. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to cultivate a deeper sense of connection, courage, and compassion in their lives.

Book Name – On Becoming A Person
Author Name – Carl R. Rogers
Review by Hein Htet Lwin Oo
A Therapist’s View of Psychotherapy” is a compass for those navigating the intricate terrain of counselling and self-discovery. This book isn’t merely ink on paper; it’s a mirror reflecting our innerlandscapes. For counsellors, students, and psychotherapists, it’s a must-read—an invitation to explore. This is my review based on my experience on the book, like the book contains the experiences and knowledge of Carl R Rogers, the father of Person Centred Therapy. I have been re-reading this book and it is giving me new insights and perspectives on the experiences. The first time I read was years ago
and at that time, it gave me information and prepare me(or at least make me feel prepared) for the experiences that a counsellor would encounter on the journey. Now, when i read this book again, the experiences that I have had in these years feel a lot more meaningful and it leads to a lot of self-reflection on my experiences. It is not just self-reflection, as Carl R Rogers had always been passionate about scientific evidence and of great curiosity, it makes me feel more curious on the subject of counselling and psychotherapy and the effects that Person centred therapy can have on people. Beyond therapists, this book touches anyone seeking authenticity. It whispers, “Know thyself.” We’re all artists shaping our lives. Like a ripple in a pond, Rogers’ insights extend far beyond therapy rooms and to everyday lives. Thus, if you are a student in counselling training, a novice or experienced counsellor, or a person
interested in counselling or a person who is just interested in “Person”, this book will be the book that satisfy your interest and also invokes hunger for knowledge. As you turn the final page of ‘On Becoming
a Person,’ consider this: How will you apply Rogers’ insights to your own canvas of life? Will you pick up the brush and create, or merely admire from afar? The choice is yours—a masterpiece awaits

Book Name – Parenting from The Inside Out
Author Name – Daniel J.Siegel.,M.D
Review by Hein Htet Lwin Oo
“Parenting from the Inside Out” is a remarkable divergence—a bridge connecting neuroscience and
psychology. Authors Daniel J. Siegel, MD, and Mary Hartzell invite readers to explore their own life experiences, unravelling the threads that shape their interactions with their children. Parenting has always
been challenging and the task of “not knowing”. However, the book is not just for parents, it is for anyone
who wants to know and understand better about themselves because the book highlights a lot of self-
reflection. As reading the book, a reader can make a lot more sense not from a Psychology view point but also from neuroscience. “Parenting from the Inside Out” encourages parents to reflect on their own life experiences to gain understanding and perspective that will help them in their parenting journey. The heart of the book lies in introspection. It encourages readers to gaze into their metaphorical mirrors, examining both the light and shadows. By embracing vulnerability, we unlock hidden reservoirs of empathy and compassion. If you are a parent trying to learn the ropes, or a person interested in psychology and/or neuroscience, or a person just trying to find one’s own self, this is one of the must-read
books.

Book Name – The Girft of Therapy
Author Name – Irvin D.Yalom, M.D
Review by Bawm Nu Mangshang
“The Gift of Therapy” is an honest expression of Irvin Yalom’s personal insights on the process of psychotherapy. It is filled with stories and anecdotes drawn from Yalom’s 35+ years of practicing psychotherapy. The many tips and vignettes are sure to enrich both experienced therapists and novices alike.
Yalom touches on important psychotherapy themes such as centrality of relationship, self-disclosure, here-and-now and dreams. As an existential psychotherapist, Yalom also highlights the importance of sensibility to existential themes.
Each chapter touches on one aspect of therapy and can be read as standalone essays. The chapters are discontinuous and not organized in a particular order. Instead, Yalom simply shares his thoughts and organizes the book in a way that is easy to follow and digest. The organization of the book allows readers to read the book any way they want: readers can either read cover-to-cover or choose to read chapters that align with their needs.
While Yalom’s insights and views are undeniably robust and invaluable, some aspects may not resonate with all readers. For example, Yalom encourages touching patients, helping patients with their personal task, disclosing certain personal information, if it means therapeutic development. Some readers may take this stance as being too loose with boundaries.
Nonetheless, “The Gift of Therapy” contains timeless wisdom that will inspire and inform generations of therapists to come. This book is highly recommended for clinicians of all levels.

Book Name – Toxic Parents
Review by Thiri Myint Zaw
“When you bring your toxic parents down to earth, when you find the courage to look at them realistically, you can begin to equalize the power in your relationship with them. It’s never too late to change.” Susan Forward’s “Toxic Parents: Overcoming their hurtful legacy and
Reclaiming your life” is a powerful and insightful book that helped me understand the impact of a toxic upbringing. Sometimes society don’t acknowledge the emotional scars created by child abuse as much as physical scars. but somehow this book acknowledges the pain and struggles of those who have grown up with toxic parents . I find this book validating as someone who has fought with my own family demons and I would recommend this book to anyone with an abusive history or anyone who are dealing with difficult family dynamics.
