Counselling: finding your own path, not just looking for answers
When we face life’s challenges, it’s natural to walk into a counselling session and think, “Just tell me what to do.” Many people feel frustrated when a counsellor doesn’t provide a direct solution, instead opting to ask probing questions. It can feel like they are going in circles or just repeating what we already know. But in reality, this isn’t avoiding the issue, it’s a carefully structured method to ensure you don’t lose your way, helping you rediscover your own strength and uncover the answers from within.
It’s not just “Advice”
Many people mistake counselling for “giving advice.” In truth, counselling is a process of facilitation. It isn’t about handing over a pre-packaged solution, it is about gently supporting you to tap into the inner power that you already possess, guiding you to find the answers yourself.
The power of Empowerment
By helping you explore different perspectives and open up new paths, counselling provides you with the empowerment to recognize the root of your problems and face them head-on. If we treat counselling like a doctor’s prescription expecting someone else to give us the “remedy,” it’s like taking medicine meant for someone else without truly understanding our own condition. It may provide temporary relief, but you risk losing the ability to shape your own life. Without addressing the root cause, you are only applying a quick fix to a deeper issue.
You are the captain of your life
You are the best captain of your own life. Think of a counsellor not as a navigator, but as a mirror, showing you the clear reflection of your situation and shining a light on what needs to be addressed. Ultimately, you are the one who must walk the path to reach your goal.
The takeaway
So, when you enter a counselling space, don’t just look for advice. Look for strength. Be patient, find your answers, and trust that you have the inherent power to discover the solution alongside your counsellor.

Resilience and empowerment through psychosocial support
Following our feature last month on our work with Malteser International, we wanted to share a closer look at the impact of the support we provide. Today, we are sharing a case study from one of our counsellors, highlighting the transformative journey of a client referred to us through Malteser International.
Ma Mya, a 33-year-old displaced mother of two, received counselling while facing severe financial and housing instability. Utilizing a Person-Centered approach and mindfulness, she learned to effectively process her emotions and develop healthier coping mechanisms. In her feedback, Ma Mya highlighted the transformative impact of the program, saying:
“I encourage everyone to seek peace by staying present in the moment. I hope others can experience the same mental and emotional support that I received. When we first find inner peace within ourselves, our communities can gradually become places of greater peace and harmony as well”.
By actively processing her distress, Ma Mya gained the inner stability to make a pivotal life decision with clarity and calm. This growth empowered her to become more emotionally supportive toward her children, taking time to better understand her son’s needs before responding. In addition, she improved communication with her relatives and grew more accepting of others as they are, without absorbing or carrying their emotional burdens.
While her external challenges remain unresolved, Ma Mya’s journey highlights how timely psychosocial support builds the vital resilience needed to navigate profound adversity.
