The importance of self assessment –  PHQ9 survey

Depression, Anxiety, Eating Disorders, and PTSD are among some of the most common mental health diagnoses detected from mental health screenings and it always good to do a self assessment on how you feel. In cooperation with international organisations, Counselling Corner will do a survey in several townships in Myanmar to get a quantitatively output of the percentage of people in these areas that consider themselves depressed. We need your help to fill in this online questionnaire in Myanmar language based on the the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) developed by psychologists from Columbia University in the mid 1990s. This assessment is free and quick to determine how you’re doing when it comes to depression (simply add your scores and look at the bottom how you’re doing).

The questionnaire is completely anonymous and helps yourself and others in Myanmar as we will get a better view on the mental health situation and needs in the country.

Employees on the verge of a mental breakdown ?

In Myanmar, the coup became a tipping point for money anxiety and burn out on daily basis. As a result, it also increased absence, unhappiness and dissatisfaction in the workplace. Recently, we got a several inquires from our corporate clients on the topic: “How can managers and HR leaders support co-workers’ mental well-being in the workplace?” After internal research, we noticed that a lack of emotional support at the workplace, can lead to higher sick and leave number and an increase in resignations. On 14 August, our counsellor: Nora organised a one hour webinar about “The Role HR plays in Employee Well-being” in Myanmar which included following topics:

a) Productivity

b) Reducing staff being absent

c) Improve company culture

Improving the way you manage your employees’ well being may seem like a mammoth task, but simple, small changes can have a huge impact. Your co-workers need you to show them that their mental wellness matters, that their workplace’s culture is for – and not against -them. You can support the well being of your employees through our counselling services, workshops, training and initiatives you offer. Contact us to plan a private training webinar for your managers and HR staff.

Tuesday Talk- a small conversation can make a huge difference

Through August, we talked about Fear. On 17th August 2022, Counsellor Su shared about fear and anxiety. First of all, counsellor explained the meaning of fear and anxiety and difference between them. Sometimes, most of us are hard to explain what we’re feeling right now so counsellor mentioned about emotional vocabulary. Once we understand our feeling, as the second step, you have to study the coping skills for fear & anxiety.

Individual counselling sessions help!

Our team of counsellors is ready to help individuals, couples or families through Zoom or face to face to talk about their personal problems. Talking helps and our counsellors are trained to listen in a safe and confidential environment, reflect and work together with the client to come to a suitable solution. Some clients already feel they are ready to stand on their own feet after 3-4 sessions while others need about 8 – 10 sessions. We usually try to get to a positive result within 10 sessions.

Each session takes about 50 minutes which is really your time to talk, think, show emotions and find a way out from the issue.  Some clients call because they just feel down, don’t feel like they are acting as they usually do while others realise they have troubles sleeping, concentrating or even worse. No emotional problem is too big to overcome but you need to make the first step and call for a first intake session.

Please do share / like and contact us if you have any questions or suggestions on the above or want to know more about our services. We want to make it easier for people to talk about mental well-being and we need help from all organizations in Myanmar to discuss mental well-being openly with your team and work on improving it.
